Tiverton & Honiton MP, Neil Parish, has backed a campaign launched by the WAVE Trust charity to reduce child abuse and neglect by 70 percent by the year 2030.
Mr Parish is supporting the 70/30 campaign which is about concentrating on prevention rather than simply reacting to these instances after they have happened.
Mr Parish said: "This is a laudable campaign because it focuses on the prevention of maltreatment to children before it happens – not least by tackling the root causes. Being a parent is extremely tough and it can be even harder for those who are dealing with issues such as mental health problems, domestic violence issues or substance abuse. Early and effective support can help parents to overcome these problems and avoid any negative impact on their children”.
"I was both surprised and shocked to hear that one in five children will experience some form of neglect or abuse during their lifetime. This has to be turned around and I think that Government can certainly do its part in combination with local authority and the work of important charities such as the WAVE Trust”.
"I think that a target of reducing abuse and neglect by 70 percent within 15 years is one that is achievable and as an MP I will be giving my backing to any measures that I believe will help us to meet that goal."
