Neil visited Hepcomotion on National Apprenticeships Week to see how the local manufacturing business is taking on and training new apprentices.
Hepco has taken on 11 new apprentices in the last year and nearly 100 apprentices have passed through the company's doors since the training school opened 20 years ago. Many of the company's managers - including the current chairman - started at Hepco as apprentices themselves. Nearly 50% of Hepco’s engineering production staff are either apprentices or former apprentices.
In recognition of their outstanding apprenticeship scheme, the organisation was recently awarded the prestigious PPMA Business, Education, Skills and Training Award (BEST).
Neil visited the training school and met some of the latest apprentices. He said:
"It was fantastic see first-hand the incredible work Hepco do every year training apprentices. They are model for how apprenticeships can boost businesses and improve life-chances for our young people. Becuase of the success of companies like Hepco, 960 people started apprenticeships in Tiverton and Honiton in 2016. That's up from 560 in 2010. I can keen for even more companies to follow the example of Hepco and increase their apprenticeship numbers. A big congratulations to them for their outstanding achievement.
