Broadband for the Blackdowns

Neil was joined by Taunton Deane MP, Rebecca Pow, to hear about an promising new development for superfast broadband in the Blackdown Hills.

They met with local residents Graham Long and Adrian McArdle to discuss a new company, Gigaclear, planning a new commercial fibre roll out in the Blackdown Hills. The new roll out will be funded entirely as a commercial investment – without any state aid at all.

It will be available in parishes such as Dunkeswell, Upottery and Yarcombe in the Tiverton and Honiton constituency. When sufficient orders are received, connections are being promised within three months. These will be fibre only connections at fast speeds of up to 50 Mbps.

Residents in these parishes can check their postcodes on the Gigaclear postcode checker (

Neil said:

“This new roll out could be a real breakthrough for broadband in Devon and Somerset. If all goes to plan, it will provide superfast broadband to large areas of the Blackdown Hills in a matter of months.”

“The Gigaclear plan could also take the pressure off the state-sponsored broadband programme and allow it to concentrate on getting broadband to other hard to reach areas.  It’s a really exciting proposal and I hope to hear more developments soon.”
