Neil Parish MP gives away a day's pay for famine relief in East Africa

Neil Parish, Member of Parliament for Tiverton and Honiton, has joined the Independent on Sunday’s Campaign to ‘Give A Day’s Pay’ to the Disasters Emergency Committee’s (DEC) East Africa famine appeal.More than 10 million people in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and the newly-formed Republic of South Sudan have been left in need of food, water and emergency healthcare because of one of the worst droughts in 60 years. Hundreds of thousands of people have fled Somalia due to the drought and the ongoing conflict; parts of the country are now afflicted by famine. As part of the effort to relieve the suffering of thousands in the Horn of Africa; the Independent on Sunday is asking for people to donate one day’s wages to the Disasters Emergency Committee. The Disasters Emergency Committee is a coalition of 14 leading UK aid agencies that finance relief for people suffering major disasters in poorer countries. The Department for International Development has announced significant funding to provide vital food assistance to 1.3 million people in Ethiopia through the next three months, and is looking at what additional support the UK could give Kenya and Somalia in addition to the strong support it has provided over the last year.Neil Parish said:“People in the Horn of Africa are in desperate and immediate need of supplies and medical treatment. I am pleased that the British Government has taken the lead in providing emergency relief and has already provided food aid for 1.36 million people in Ethiopia who would otherwise starve. In Kenya Britain is providing medical support and clean water for 130,000 refugees in the Dadaab refugee camp and aid flights have landed in Mogadishu, Somalia.“I would like to thank the Independent on Sunday for raising awareness of the drought in East Africa and encouraging people to give what money they can to help. Thousands of ordinary Britons have once again shown their generosity and have donated to the Disasters Emergency Committee’s (DEC) East Africa famine appeal. I would urge everyone to give what they can because we really can make a difference.”So far Britons have raised £45 million in donations to help the people of East Africa.
