Neil Parish MP supports Daylight Saving at Crealy Great Adventure Park
Neil Parish visited Devon’s Crealy Great Adventure Park near Exeter on Tuesday 31st August to meet with Angela Wright MBE, Founder and Managing Director, where they discussed the benefits to local business of the proposed introduction of Daylight Saving Time.
Moving the clocks forward by one hour throughout the year, amounting to GMT + 1 in Winter and GMT + 2 in Summer, would provide lighter evenings that would help to save over 80 deaths and prevent 200 serious injuries on our roads each year, cut CO₂ emissions by 447,000 tonnes per year by reducing the need for electric lighting and would allow more sports activities to take place in the evening.
The extra daylight hour would boost British tourism earnings by £3.3 billion and create up to 80,000 new full time jobs nationally. This is vitally important in Devon as tourism brings in £2.3 billion annually and supports 68,000 jobs (12% of employment).
Speaking during his visit to Crealy Great Adventure Park, Neil Parish said, “These lighter evenings would be just the sort of boost to our tourism industry that Devon needs. It would allow more usable sunlight for businesses and tourist attractions, encourage outdoor activities and sport, and generally improve our quality of life. I am sure that the brighter evenings will also cheer everybody up!”
On the 3rd December Parliament will be debating Rebecca Harris MP’s Private Member’s Bill, which calls for a cross-departmental assessment of the potential benefits of advancing the UK’s clocks for a three-year trial.
